  1. The DELmar Loop Alyssa Aldrich

  2. My Thesis: • Through a textual analysis of the Delmar Loop in Saint Louis, Missouri, this paper will argue that the tourist destination has the appearance or ambiance of hipster culture or “edginess,” but in fact does so in order to sell the city as “urban” and “trendy” without retaining the demographics of cultures on which such “edginess” relies.

  3. Background information • This district got its name (The Loop) because a century ago at this location, trolleys from downtown Saint Louis would “loop around” to go back to the city. • Is a place with a lot of history, known for its energetic evolution • “One of the 10 Great Streets in America” according to The American Planning Association • Is known for its vibrant, urban style hipster ambiance, a 6-block shopping and entertainment district in Saint Louis

  4. An Overview of the Loop: • A strip filled with an eclectic mix of retail, books music, boutiques, cafés, famous restaurants, tattoos, art galleries, live entertainment, movies, etc. • A walk-of-fame, honoring famous St. Louisans • “café culture” • Has a re-appropriated image of hipster culture by seeking to appear embracive to people of all different walks of life (diversified)

  5. Mid-High Priced Places in the loop: • Melting Pot • Brandt’s Café • Eclipse Restaurant • Starbucks • Etc.

  6. Social interactions of this area: • Common demographic of visitors is college age, white, suburban people. (Washington University’s campus is just blocks away from the Loop) • Diversified atmosphere, people from all different walks of life are attracted to the Loop • Musicians play music on street corners • Middle class people are drawn to this tourist spot because of its ambiance and the Loop receives most of its money from those people

  7. Social Implications: • That it is a cultural place, re-appropriation of hipster culture image • Is a district purposely created by the City of Saint Louis to create this image to appear urban and trendy to try to appeal to a younger demographic and to be a distinguished establishment unique from many other places in STL.
