Welcome to WMS 6th grade Orientation
Welcome to WMS • School starts at 7:55am • Do not drop off your child before 7:00am • Hot breakfast line will run from 7:15-7:50 (students arriving on late busses only will be served hot breakfast after 7:50am.) • Grab and go breakfast will be available for students dropped off after 7:50am. • Drop offs and pick ups will be in the front loop
Academics • Zero Failure Policy- WMS will be focusing on making sure that all students are successful. • 5th period credit recovery • Extra academics during intermural time • Incentives and rewards for students *** Please understand that incentives and rewards can be withheld if students have not met the academic and behavior expectations established for them. Also, 6th grade is a big step up from elementary. The expectations are higher, there will be homework, there will be a lot of reading, there will be increased rigor. But we will make every effort to help your child adjust to the higher expectations of middle school.
Academics Cont. • RTI- Response to Intervention- Giving students extra opportunities to work on Reading and Math Skills -All WMS students have 4th period RTI or Enrichment -They are grouped by their Reading RIT scores ( working using Reading Plus, Lexia, Failure Free Reading, or Enrichment opportunities) -Math they are working on ALEKS or Catchup Math -They are assessed and given grades in this class based on the work they complete. The ALEKS and Catchup Math grades are calculated in with their Math grade.
Academics Cont. • High school Credit Courses- Algebra I, Geometry, and Earth Space Science. Eligibility for these courses is determined by MAP or RIT scores for Math and Science. Students are only given high school credit if they pass the course for the year and the End of Course Assessments given by the high school in May for each course. • 6th grade Assessments- MAP- Given three times per year. Used for placement in classes and RTI progress monitoring. (not the only piece of data that we use) KPREP- Given at the end of the school year. ACT Aspire- This is a new assessment that we will be piloting for ACT. There will be a 6th grade test. This is what will be replacing the EXPLORE exam that the 8th grade will be taking. This data will be looked at to determine high school readiness and will also be used for placement.
