  2. The Germanics • Though pagan the Germanics were necessary because they could protect the people • Germanic ways of Governing the People: • Chieftains and Kings • The Bloodfued and Wergeld • The Ordeal

  3. The Conversion of the Germanics • The most powerful Germanic tribe in Western Europe is the Franks in modern France. • The Franks were devout Pagans. However, 493 King Clovis will convert to Christianity to impress his wife Clotilde.

  4. The Rapid Spread of Christianity • The Frankish King Charlemagne will then spread Christianity all over Europe by building an Empire. • Also at this time the Church will begin to Build Monasteries all over Europe to Spread Christianity

  5. Monasteries • Monasteries will become an important part of the church as center of Religion, Wealth, Education, and Culture. • The Monasteries will carry on Roman Culture

  6. Gregory the Great • Saint Gregory the Great will be the first powerful Pope to get involved in the Secular world. • He will declare himself the ruler of all Christendom… All Europe?
