WELCOME TO: Mrs. Martinez’s 6TH GRADE English CLASS!!!!
A Day in Mrs. Martinez’s Class • Warm-Ups: Warm-ups will cover grammar, word stems, revise and editing, and dictionary work.. These are done everyday. • Mini Lesson: (10-15 Minutes) This is when I will teach using an anchor chart, read aloud, notes, or modeling to help students learn something new to improve their writing. • Independent Writing: (25-30 Min) Students are expected to write quietly and I will conference with them throughout the week on their writing. • Sharing:(10 Minutes)This is the student’s chance to share with the class or their writing partners any ideas or work they are proud of.
How your student Earns their Grades: • Warm Ups- Other Grade • Daily Grade- I take a daily grade based on student effort and participation. This will be averaged at the end of the semester and used as a minor grade. • Minor Grades:may consist of rough drafts/prewriting, editing passages, quizzes, classwork, and other assignments as necessary. . Student will also be expected to write a paper on a book they have read during the six weeks. Good recommendations will be placed on our “Books We Love” board. • Major Grades: Typically each six weeks students will have an exam as well as a paper to write that will count as major grades. • Homework- Students will have homework two times a week. They will write for thirty minutes. It can be any day that works best for them but will always be due on the same day.
Supplies • Students are encouraged to leave their binder in my classroom. We use our binders every day and I feel if I allow them to keep it in class it can only help them. However, if they ask I will allow them to take it home. • They need something to write and correct with everyday. • They need to bring a novel to class everyday.
English TEXTBOOK: • English Textbooks are NOT being issued this school year. • Each English classroom has a class set of textbooks that can be used DURING class. • Used for: vocabulary, grammar, examples, etc. • Since are class is following the workshop model we will rarely use our textbooks except to look at examples of good writing.
