Reading/Language Arts • Curriculum = Open Court (6th grade) • Study Guides: Story Study, Vocabulary Study, Spelling Practice, Grammar Study • Use of Literature Circles to enhance learning of OCR stories • Themes: • 1) Perseverance • 3) Taking a Stand • 2) Ancient Civilizations • 4) Music • 5) Ecology and 6) Question of Values • Tests = Fridays • Usually 1 story/week
Math • Scott Foresman (6th grade text) • Student made Study Guides • Teacher-made Lesson Worksheets with How-to-Solve Steps, Examples, Guided Practice and More Practice. Kept in a Math INB • Using multiple methods to solve math problems • Tests/Quizzes • 7th Grade Supplementary text • will use this text to enhance their learning • Accelerated Math Program • to enhance their learning • Daily Math Challenge Workbook • To keep up with the 6th grade Standards
Math Concepts • Number Sense: NS1 and NS 2 • Add, Subtract, Multiply, Divide: positive and negative--whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; Use of percents • Statistics: SDP • Mean, Median, Mode, Range, Understanding Questioning and Graphs; Probability • Algebra: AF • Solve 1-step and Multiple-Step Equations, Ratios/Proportions • Geometry: MG • Circumference/Perimeter ; Area and Volume of Circles, Triangles and Quadrilaterals • Math Reasoning: MR • Applications to Real-Life situations using the above concepts.

Grading Policy • To show competency or achievement of standards • Letter grades (A, B, C, D, or F) • Number grades (5, 4, 3, 2, or 1) • A~5 high achieving, excellent • B, C~ 4 or 3 well done(B) or passing(C) • D~ 2 approaching grade level, almost passing • F~ 1 not passing, failing. • Grades are e-mailed • every 4-5 weeks. • I will communicate if the student is not achieving their goals or if they are missing work
Schedule • Our day includes: • Computers ( 2 days/week) • PE (3 days/week, with Mile Friday) • Reading (every day) • Writing/Spelling (every day) • Math (every day) • Social Studies (4-5 days/week) • Science ( 3 days/week)
Student Field Trips and Academic/Behavioral Requirements • Please refer to contract received on the 1st day of school • Any Field Trip Form is due 10 days before we attend. • There are no phone calls home about missing forms
MSOE! • MSOE: • October 15-19 • please indicate whether your child is going or not going on the sign in paper in the back • Chaperones!!! • please indicate whether you like to chaperone on the sign-in paper in the back • We are limited to the number of chaperones needed. • Forms • will be coming home later

Fingerprinting • Volunteers must be fingerprinted through the District in order to volunteer for on or off campus activities. • Contact Tara to see if you are fingerprinted
Goal Setting Students set goals for the year and semester • Grades • Principal’s (straight A’s all year). • All 3 semesters = Principal’s Lamp of Knowledge Medal at Promotion • Honor Roll(3.0-3.9). • All 3 semesters = Ribbon at Promotion • National Elementary Honor Society-(NEHS) • AR Goals by Semester • Student Leadership • Tutoring, Teacher Assisting in other classrooms, Library Assistants, Green Team, etc. • Earn levels of Achievement, depending on hours recorded: Foulks Ranch, Governor’s, Bronze, Silver, Gold
