Real World Problem Bertha went to the store to buy Gatorade. If she wants to get 5 bottles, and each drink cost $3, how much money should Bertha give Eminem the cashier.
The Equation Equation: Y= F(x) = 3(x) = 3(5) X= The # of bottles she wants to buy Y= The total amount she has to pay
Independent & Dependent • The independent variable is my “x” which is the number of bottles she wants to buy. • The dependent variable is my “y” which is my total cost. • “y” DEPENDS on “x” • The total cost DEPENDS the # of bottles
Domain & Range • Domain is the “x” values • Range is the “y” values D:{1,2,3,4,5} R:{3,6,9,12,15}
Continuous or Discrete? • It is continuous because my data does not contain points and has a line. • You can not purchase 1 ½ Bottles, you can only purchase the tickets by 1, 2, 3, and so on. So we will not use any of the numbers that are between 1 and 2.
Is it a Function? • A function is where there is one independent value paired with exactly one dependent value. • This means that the x values cannot repeat. • Since my X values are all different, then that means that it is a FUNCTION.
And Sooo….. Depending on the amount of Gatorade bottles she wants which is 5, and the fact that each bottle cost $3, the total amount of money that she would have to give Eminem the cashier would be $15.
