My Real World Problem Two brothers went to a book store with a sale that every book you bought cost the same amount. They Bought “X” books with a total cost of $82.75. One brother spent $36.76. How many books did they buy together. *Sale fine print- (cost of every book is the sum of the cost of the books divided by the number of books you buy)
The Equation The equation to my problem is Y=82.75-36.76 or f(X)=82.75-36.76 “X” Y= The cost of the books the second brother bought X= The total number of book they bought
Independent and Dependant The Independent variable is the cost of the books the second brother bought The Dependant variable is the total number of book they bought Y Depends on X The total cost DEPENDS on the number of books they bought.
Domain and Range Domain is the X values Range is the Y values Domain- {6 ,7, 8, 9, 10 } Range- {13.82, 11.81, 10.34, 9.19, 8.28 }
Is it Continuous or Discrete? MY data contains only points and Not a line, so it is a discrete graph. You can not purchase 5½ books, you can only purchase the books by 1, 2, 3, etc..
Is It a Function Functions are when every Y value has a unique X value & passes the “vertical line test.” Yes this is a Function
Conclusion! Two brother bought X books. One of them spent $36.76 and they had a total cost of $82.25. Every book had to cost the sum of all the books(Y) divided by the number of books bought.(X) 82.25/X(9)= 9.19 9.19x4=36.76- 82.25-36.76=45.49 or 45.49+36.76=82.75 82.75-the cost of all the books they bought 9=X-the number of books they bought 36.76-the cost of one brothers books 4-the number of book that the brother who payed 36.76 received 45.49-The amount of the brother who bought 5 books
