Chapters, Local Activities, Distinguished Lecturers Steven H. Gold NPSS AdCom Meeting 7 March 2009 Baltimore, Maryland
Chapters Report • MGA now lists 15 NPSS chapters or joint chapters. Fourteen appear to be active, 7 in the US, 6 in Europe, 1 in Asia. • The Cleveland Section joint chapter appears to be inactive. • The Oakland-East Bay Section chapter was recently revitalized. • Our newest chapter, the AP/ED/MTT/CPMT/NPS joint chapter in Saratov, Russia, affiliated with NPSS on 3 October 2008. • Czechoslovakia Section submitted a petition to create a new NPS Chapter; now pending at MGA; will require NPS approval. • Three chapters requested and received financial support in 2008 (Albuquerque, $250; East Ukraine, $500; Los Alamos, $500); thus far, two chapters have requested financial support for 2009: Saratov ($500, paid) and East Ukraine ($500, pending). • Chapter web page was updated for 2009. • I plan to develop a standard chapter annual report form, similar to those used by some other societies. • The Saratov chapter will submit an article to the June Newsletter. The Italy chapter will cosponsor Physcon 2009, and also plans a Newsletter article. I am considering requesting other chapters to submit articles to future issues.
Distinguished Lecturers Report • The existing motion authorizes $20k per year for travel expenses of DLs making presentations at NPSS Chapter or IEEE Sections or student chapter meetings. • The existing 17 DLs, offering 29 lectures, are being continued into 2009 (unless the DL or the TC chair objects). • In 2008, 10 lectures were presented, 3 at NPSS expense ($1.6k), including 4 at NPSS chapters; thus far, 6 lectures are scheduled for 2009, including 1 to an NPSS chapter at our expense. • The distinguished lectures list was published in September NPSS Newsletter. For 2009, more needs to be done to promote and publicize the program. • At Bill Moses’ suggestion, a set of standard DL slides is being developed, with Peter Clout’s assistance. • Also, 7 of our 14 active chapters, but only one DL, are based outside North America; transoceanic travel to deliver lectures may not be cost effective; more transnational lecturers needed. Action Item:I request that all TC chairs nominate transnational lecturers for 2009.
