  2. Importance of communication • Communication is important for successful care. • The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) states that information should be accessible, accurate and acceptable and meet the needs of the patient (2011).

  3. Informed consent • What is informed consent?Bound by ethical and legal frameworks • Informed consent helps to ensure that a patient is not deceived by medical staff. • Remember that informed consent is an ongoing process and needs to be revisited by staff frequently even if only informally.

  4. Respect patients autonomy throughout the process of informed consent. • Patients need to feel like they are involved within the decision making process and that decisions are not getting made for them.

  5. Partnership Working • What is partnership working? • Partnership working is key for health professionals to enable effective health promotion. • Schools need to become more integrated within health sectors due to increased rates of both STDs and teenage pregnancy which could be influenced from binge drinking. • Nurses are responsible for advocating public health (Linsley, P, Kane, R, Owen S, 2011)
