Poster in CSQCDII Xiaoyu Lai Peking University State of matter inside quark stars
Basic motivations • Pulsars could be a special kind of neutron stars -- quark stars, as indicated by some observations. • Quark clustersare suggested to form in cold quark matter. • At low temperature and high density, clusters could crystallize and form solid quark stars.
Two phenomenological models: 1. We apply a polytropic equation of state to quark stars. • an extension of the model with a linear equation of state 2. We model quark stars composed of Lennard-Jones matter. • introduce the inter-cluster potential analog to inert gas
Methods & Results 1. Polytropic model L=Linside- Loutside Mass-radius curves: X. Y. Lai & R. X. Xu, Astroparticle physics, 31 (2009), 128.
Gravitational energy releases during the AIQ (Accretion- Induced star-Quake) process.
2. Quark stars composed of Lennard-Jones matter. Inter-cluster potential: ~ 2 fm V r If the potential well is deep enough, the clusters would form crystal structure.
Mass-radius curves: Nq is the number of quarks in one cluster X. Y. Lai & R. X. Xu, arXiv: 0905.2839
Conclusions • Both of the two models have stiffer EoS, and larger maximum mass for quark stars (larger than 2 solar-mass). • The gravitational energy releases during the AIQ process couldexplain the observed energy of three supergiant flares from soft gamma-ray repeaters (~10^47 ergs).
