  2. Pinyin System • The Pinyin system is the Chinese phonetic alphabet for transliterating Chinese characters. • It can help you learn standard Mandarin pronunciation. • You may use it to type Chinese characters on computers.

  3. Structure of Syllables A Chinese syllable has three elements: initial, final, and tone. For example: 你好!Nǐ hǎo!

  6. Tones Mandarin Chinese is a tonal language. Each character has one of four distinctive tones. They are written as: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th ˉ ˊ ˇ ˋ

  8. Tones (Cont’) • The 1st tone ( 55 ) is a “ high-level ” tone, e.g. “ mā” • The 2nd tone ( 35 ) is a “ high-rising” tone, e.g. “ má” • The 3rd tone ( 214 ) is a “ falling-and-rising” tone, e.g. “ mǎ” • The 4th tone ( 51) is a “ falling” tone, e.g. “ mà”
