Research: Alkaline Earth Metals Alkali Metals The physical and chemical properties of elements change in a regular pattern as you both go across as well as down the periodic table. As a result, when elements close to each other are compared, they have many of the same properties. One property is the ability to form precipitates. This is an experiment in which you will make a comparison of the abilities of the alkaline earth metals to form precipitates. And as a result of that information, apply it to make predictions about the alkali metals.
safety goggles spot plate magnesium nitrate calcium nitrate barium nitrate strontium nitrate potassium sulfate potassium chromate potassium carbonate piece of white paper (notebook paper okay) a chart of the periodic table Materials:
Procedures: 1. Place the spot plate on the paper so that there are 4 spots running down and 3 spots going across. 2. Write the names of the alkaline earth metals in each of the nitrate solutions along the side. Then write the names of the 3 potassium substances along the top. Carbonate Sulfate Chromate Mg Ca Sr Ba
Procedures: 3. Put on your safety goggles.
Procedures: 4. Place 3 drops of Potassium Carbonatein each of the 4 spots under the word Carbonate (going down the column). Place 3 drops of Potassium Sulfate in each of the 4 spots under the word Sulfate (also going down the column). Place 3 drops of potassium chromate in each of the 4 spots under the word Chromate. (Completing the last column). CAUTION- Do not mix the chemicals or allow the liquid from one spot to get into another spot!
Procedures: 5. Take the dropping bottle of magnesium nitrate and place 3 drops in each of the 3 spots in the row (going across) labeled Magnesium. Observe each spot carefully and record the result in the data table. Repeat this procedure for the calcium nitrate, strontium nitrate and barium nitrate. CAUTION- Do not mix the chemicals or allow the liquid from one spot to get into another spot!
