5 Steps to Earn and Maintain an ASHRAE Certification – Step 1 Read the Guidebook: It contains important information related to the examination, including eligibility requirements. Go to www.ashrae.org/OPMP and download the guidebook.
OPMP Eligibility Requirements Any individual who meets one of the following combinations of academic and work experience criteria will be eligible to take the OPMP certification examination. • Government-issued or government-recognized license as a professional engineer or building contractor and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in facility operations OR • Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in one of the following areas: facilities operations/management, construction, design, or consulting, including a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in facility operations OR
OPMP Eligibility Requirements (cont’d) Associate’s degree or Technical degree or certificate in building design, construction, construction management, facility operation, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning and a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in one of the following areas: facilities operations/ management, construction, design, or consulting, including a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in facility operations OR High school diploma or equivalent or construction-related trades training or building operations training from a nationally or internationally recognized trade association with a minimum of seven (7) years’ experience in one of the following areas: facilities operations/management, construction, design, or consulting, including a minimum of two (2) years’ experience in facility operations

5 Steps to Earn and Maintain an ASHRAE Certification – Step 3 Schedule an Examination: Click on the Testing Centers Worldwide link under the appropriate certification at www.ashrae.org/OPMP. Examinations are offered at over 300 testing centers. The OPMP examination is 2.5 hours long and contains 115 multiple choice items.
5 Steps to Earn and Maintain an ASHRAE Certification – Step 4 Review Available Resources: Each certification Guidebook identifies available resources that may help candidates gain an understanding of the body of knowledge the examination tests. Available resources include ASHRAE-owned and non-ASHRAE owned publications and courses. Some candidates pass the examination from their working knowledge and familiarity with ASHRAE Standards and Publications.
5 Steps to Earn and Maintain an ASHRAE Certification – Step 5 Renew Your Certification: Each certification holder must earn 45 ASHRAE Continuing Education units (ACEs) during the three year period following initial certification or the last renewal. ACEs can be earned through attendance at or participation in ASHRAE-sponsored and non-ASHRAE-sponsored educational activities. The activities must be technical in nature and must be related directly to operations and performance management.
