ASHRAE Research Mission: Remain the foremost, authoritative & responsive international source of technical and educational information, standards and guides on the interaction between people and the indoor & outdoor environment through the operation of HVAC&R systems in buildings and other applications.
ASHRAE Research • The ‘backbone’ of every ASHRAE publication, ALI Course, Certification, & essence of ASHRAE • Overseen by Member-led Technical Committees (TCs) and the Research Administration Committee (RAC)
Research Promotion • Hit the $2,350,000 mark, making this the fifth year in a row to exceed the previous year’s ‘all time high’ • Represents a 4% increase over last year • ASHRAE’s Research program has supported more than 700 projects in the last 50 years, addressing areas such as: • Indoor air quality • Refrigeration • Energy efficiency • Thank you!!!
Standards • Standard 55: Thermal Environmental Conditions for Human Occupancy • Standard 62.1 & .2-2013: Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor IAQ & for Low Rise Buildings • Standard 90.1-2013: Energy Standards for Buildings • Standard 189.1-2014: Design of High Performance Green Buildings
Performance Measurement Protocols • Developed in collaboration with CIBSE and USGBC • Addresses the what, how and when of measurement • Protocols are developed at three levels for each of six performance categories: energy, water, thermal comfort, indoor air quality, lighting and acoustics. • Companion book focusing on best practices due out in June 2011
Indoor Air Quality Guide:Best Practices for Design, Construction and Commissioning • Practical guidance on achieving good IAQ in commercial buildings • Joint effort of ASHRAE, AIA, BOMA, US EPA, SMACNA and USGBC www.ashrae.org/iaq
Advanced Energy Guidance • Series of publications designed to provide recommendations for achieving energy savings over the minimum code requirements of Standard 90.1, • Over 250,000 guides in circulation • 80 percent US, 8 percent Canada, 12 percent ROW • Available for free download ww.ashrae.org/freeaedg
Advanced Energy Guidance • Topics include: • Commercial Buildings • Schools • Warehouses • Hospitals • Low Rise & High Rise Residential Buildings ww.ashrae.org/freeaedg
Existing Building Guidance • Provides business case for energy improvements • Demonstrates how to benchmark performance against comparable buildings • Illustrates how to reduce energy use and cost by up to 30 percent • Developed with BOMA, AIA, USGBC, IESNA
