  5. Pre-War Italian Aggression • Benito Mussolini • Fascist dictator of Italy from 1922 to 1943 • Ultimately forms an alliance with Hitler's Nazi Germany il duce

  6. Italy invades Ethiopia, 1935 • Italy successfully defeats the Ethiopian forces (1936). • Italy’s military now occupies Ethiopia. • Mussolini makes an alliance with Hitler.

  7. Spanish Civil War The Spanish Civil War: 1936 - 1939 Francisco Franco Italian troops in Madrid • Spain had civil war (1936-1939) • Fascist Francisco Franco wants to overthrow the democratic government in Spain • Germany and Italy step in to help Franco become dictator

  8. Spanish Civil War-German Involvement • Why did Hitler help Franco? • Hoped Franco would become his ally • He used Spain to test his military forces • Especially to test his new air force (Luftwaffe). • German planes bombed the city of Guernica in Spain. Hitler And Franco

  12. Japanese Aggression • Why invade Manchuria? • The need for new markets and new sources of raw materials such as coal, oil, and iron ore • China protested to the League of Nations, but the League didn’t stop Japan.

  13. Rape of Nanking (1937 - 1938) • Japanese invade the Chinese city of Nanking • 300,000 Chinese killed in 6 weeks • Thousands of residents in the city raped by Japanese military

  14. United States Responds • How does the U.S. respond to Japan’s aggressive expansion? • U.S. puts restrictions on Japan’s trade • Also issues an embargo (stops trading) • Japan can no longer acquire scrap metal, oil, and gasoline from the USA. • This angers Japan!!!
