The Enlightenment: ________________________________________________________ Use the reading provided to answer each of the following questions in your notes. • What rights does Locke believe are guaranteed to all people? • What is the relationship between governments and their people? • What is Hobbes’ view of human nature? • According to Hobbes, why are governments created?

  13. John Locke: ________________________________________________________ • Argued that government is formed as a contract between the ruled and their ruler • People have natural rights (life, liberty, and property)

  14. Thomas Hobbes: ________________________________________________________ • Human beings are nasty, selfish, and naturally evil • A strong ruler (King) is necessary to rule the government and keep people from ripping each other apart I kind of look like a movie villain, don’t I?

Montesquieu: ________________________________________________________ Believed that government powers needed to be separated into three branches: • A legislature to make laws • An executive to enforce laws • A judiciary to judge and interpret laws I don’t know about you, but I don’t trust one guy with all of the power.
