  2. Wednesday February 8, 2011 • Understand what was established by Marbury v Madison, the effects of the Louisiana Purchase and the Industrial Revolution. • Think about it… • Why do fast food companies pay their workers so little?

  3. THE BILL OF RIGHTS IN THE BATTLEGROUND STATE OF MASSACHUSETTS THERE WAS MUCH SKEPTICISM ABOUT THE CONSTITUTION. ANTI-FEDERALISTS LOBBIED HARD AT THE CONVENTION TO REQUIRE A BILL OF RIGHTS BE ADDED IN ORDER TO GUARANTEE RATIFICATION. THIS STARTED A MOMENTUM WHICH LED TO THE EVENTUAL ADDITION OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS, WRITTEN IN 1789 BY MADISON AND RATIFIED BY THE STATES OVER THE NEXT TWO YEARS.

  4. The Bill of Rights • The federalists fulfilled their promised and passed the first 10 amendments to the Constitution, the Bill of Rights.

  5. THE LOUISIANA TERRITORY INCLUDED PARTS OF LOUISIANA, ARKANSAS, MISSOURI, IOWA, MINNESOTA, NORTH DAKOTA, SOUTH DAKOTA, NEBRASKA, KANSAS, OKLAHOMA, COLORADO, WYOMING, TEXAS, NEW MEXICO, AND MONTANA

  6. Louisiana Purchase • The United States purchased the Louisiana Territory from France, which double the size of the US and gave it control of all of the Mississippi River.

  7. Monroe Doctrine • President Monroe declared that the Americas were no longer open to Colonization, told the Europeans to keep out of Latin America.

  8. Marbury v Madison • The case came before the Supreme Court and they ruled that the law was unconstitutional and invalid. • For the first time the supreme court asserted the power of judicial review, the power to decide whether laws are constitutional and strike down those that are not.

  9. Eli Whitney • Popularized the use of interchangeable parts which increased mass production throughout the North. • Invented the Cotton Gin which made producing cotton cheap and profitable. “King Cotton” made the South more dependent than ever on slave labor.

  10. Industrial Revolution • The IndustrialRev brought large scale manufacturing and factories to the North. • Factories provided many unskilled labor jobs, but it provided very low pay. • Workers began to organize in labor unions to press for better wages and working conditions.

  11. Immigration • Between 1815-1860 over 5 million immigrants arrived in the US from primarily Ireland and Germany. • Many immigrants were Catholic and discriminated against because of it. • Nativism– the preference for native born people and the desire to limit immigration became a popular reaction.
