  2. Manager + 4 FSW’s (16-32 hrs/week) • Access:- Self referral • Through another Team member • Via outside agency What is Family Support? • Service – one to one support and information including assessment of need and support plan.

  3. Scope of Evaluation Based around central questions :- • Do families receive information and support? • Do they receive it in such time and in such a way that they experience a reduction in stress? • Is possible crisis alleviated?

  4. Methodology • 35 closed files – data extracted using pro-forma • Interviews with FSW/Service Users/Professionals from key agencies • Analysis – quantitative and qualitative

  5. Quantitative Findings • 30-40 cases are active each month • FSW see a third of total no. of children seen by the Programme. • Duration ranged from 1 – 16 months (average being 5 months), however most closed in less time. • Cases open over one month, average time spent – 2.25 hours per month per case • Span of time -30mins – 55 hrs (dependant on issues, not total length of time involved.)

Qualitative Findings • Some +ve resolution in all but 2 cases • 15 cases show complete resolution • 12 cases – workers felt underlying issues not resolved and difficulties likely to reoccur in the future. • Building up trust is key to families identifying issues that are important to them (intervention NOT imposed). • Family Support reduced stress and was appreciated by families • Professional in the area appreciated FS an suggested it enable them to do their own work more effectively and completely.

  7. How does it work? • FS attempts to address parents/carers STATED concerns • Pace of interaction and intervention set by family • Support tailored to individual family’s needs via telephone/advocacy/attending meetings/practical help/transport.

  8. What we learned • Some issues which took a lot of FSW time may have been resolved by other agencies having different systems in place • FS offered at CRUICIAL times enable families to quickly recover and is preventative of on-going stress and crisis

  9. Suggestions • Small emergency fund for immediate help would save a lot of time • Information pack explaining local services • Greater awareness of FS Service would allow more families to benefit.
