Usage and Proposals of ATLAS experiment for ELMB upgrade ELMB++ Meeting – April, 12th 2010 S. Franz, O. Gutzwiller, V. Filimonov, S. Schlenker (ATLAS Central DCS) S. Kerstens, F. Lanni, L. Hervas, H. Boterenbrood, P. Philips, Z. Hajduk, S. D’ Auria, S. Tarem (ATLAS subdetectors) With input from EN/ICE
Usage of ELMBs in ATLAS • Inner Detector : ~ 1060 ELMBs • Pixel: ~700 ELMBs (PP2 areas) – Standards except ~100 customized (used for TDAQ) • SCT: ~160 ELMBs (only 40 in UX15) – 3 different customized + standard ones • TRT: ~220 ELMBs (in PP2 + few in USA15) – standard firmware but custom dll – Analog part powered separately • IDE: ~80 ELMBs (from PP2 to USA15) – customized versions • Calorimeters: ~350? • LARG: 70 ELMBs in UX15 + 30 in USA15 – standard firmware • TIL: ~250? • Muons: ~3500 • MDT: 1200 ELMBs (on chambers) – standard • RPC: 800 ELMBs (on chambers) – customized (and driven by linux system) • TGC: 1500 ELMBs (on chambers + 50 in USA15)- customized firmware for DI usage + special driver (developer away) • Infrastructure: ~ 500 • 100 in UX15 (toroid area + structures), 400 in counting rooms – standard firmware • Total in ATLAS: ~5400 ELMBs (out of the 10 000 ELMB which were produced ) S. Franz – on behalf of the ATLAS DCS community
Proposals for ELMB upgrade • Performances : • ADC conversion speed to be increased • Radiation tolerance adapted to the life-time of the experiment? • Optimization of current functionalities / new functionalities: • Better protection of Digital I/O • Separate output control line of ADC and SPI port on microcontroller (currently 1 port for both functionalities -> Prevent their usage in parallel) • Enhance embedded software to be more flexible (user functions) • Frequency measurement • Embed a DAC on board • Other serial interface protocol (I2C) • Backwards compatibility: • Pin-to-pin compatible with current version • Space requirements : Could be an issue if board size increases (Muon – still to be quantified) • People would like to keep the ELMB powering infrastructure • Keep voltage levels of digital IO and voltage reference of analog part • ELMB readout • Usage of PVSS for ELMB operation • Want to investigate a replacement of CANopen OPC server by OPC Unified Architecture (platform independent) for communication with hardware S.
