Education Subcommittee May Telecon 25 May 2011
EdSC Mission • To provide students and educators access to activities and information that highlight aerospace structures and engineering
Proposed EdSC Output • Provide web-based information/curricula/podcasts to enhance existing materials • Target group: Undergraduate students – Soph-Jr. • Collaborate with existing organizations to • Review existing on-line information • Develop new on-line curriculum and media • Inform of upcoming events/opportunities for students and teachers
Proposed Approach • Break out into 2 groups to work on two action items described herein • Please choose one or both • Monthly telecon to report results to EdSC • Very open to everyone’s ideas and experiences
Action #1 • Compile a list of online aerospace engineering education resources “literature review” • Government • Industry • Academia • Engineering Societies • Identify and pursue opportunities for collaboration • AIAA website/ AIAA Educator Associate: Lisa Bacon, Stephan Brock • Coordination with other organizations ASEE/ASME/NAE and other TCs • Curriculum development and review • Identify existing activities/competitions for students • Identify contacts • Identify gaps in information for college undergraduates • This will help us tailor the content of our work
Some K12 websites • teachengineering.org • egfi-k12.org • engineeringyourlife.org
Action #2 • Create a list of topic areas for new web-based information (short articles or podcasts). • Research, testing, manufacturing, operations, etc. • Content should include some basic engineering/science principles (math) and then relate to a bigger picture problem/activity
