Roman Civilization Founded around 750 BCE, republic started around 500 BCE and lasted nearly 500 years In comparison to Greece, Rome is recognized more for its practical achievements: law, engineering, military conquest Rome came into contact w/Greece during conquests of Mediterranean, saw their arts & religion and liked them In 1st century BCE, Julius Caesar became dictator. After his assassination in 27 BCE Rome became an Empire

    4. Roman Theatre Borrowed freely from the Greeks Theatre focused on comedy and popular entertainments

    5. Circus Maximus First laid out in 600 BCE for chariot races (remodeled often) Held over 60,000 spectators

    6. Colosseum Built in 80 CE Has influenced stadiums today Held 50,000 Most popular entertainment: gladiatorial combat

Roman Comedic Playwrights Plautus (254-184 BCE) dealt with domestic situations (usually romance) used stock characters in farces (lots of mistaken identity) Dialogue meant to be sung The Menaechmi Adapted into Comedy of Errors (Shakespeare) and The Boys from Syracuse (Rogers & Hart) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (music by Stephen Sondheim)
