1. Greeting 2. Small Talk 3. Big Conversation with FUQs 4. Closing/Goodbye Conversation Flow
Greeting • A: Hi, how are you? B: I’m fine. Thanks. And you? A: I’m good. Thanks. • A: Hey, how’s it going? B: Not bad. And you? A: Oh, things are really good. Thanks! (this greeting means how are things in your life) • A: Hey, what’s up? B: Not much. And you? A: Well, I’ve been…. (think about what have been doing lately)
Small Talk • Begins the conversation and helps each person relax. • Talk about every day situations such as…. 1. Weather 2. Appearance 3. School
Weather • We usually mention the weather ONLY when it’s GREAT or TERRIBLE • On a beautiful, sunny day…. A: “It’s a beautiful day today, isn’t it?” B: “Yeah! I can’t wait to go outside and get some sunshine”. A: “I know, me too!” • On a rainy / freezing cold / really hot day…. A: “How about all this rain we’ve been having lately?” B: “Yeah, it’s really depressing. I hate being stuck inside all the time.” A: “Ugh, I know. Me too.”
Appearance • Clothing A: “You look really nice today. Is that a new ___ you’re wearing?” B: “Yes, it is. I got it (who/where/when)…… A: (make a response based on the their answer) • Physical Appearance A: “Did you get a new hair cut?” B: “Yes, I did”. A: “Oh, it looks really nice on you.” B: “Thanks” IMPORTANT: It is NOT POLITE to make a comment about negative appearances. For example, do NOT tell someone they look TIRED. Or their haircut is UGLY. Or they look BIGGER.
School life A: “So, how are your classes going this semester?” B: “Hmm, They’re going really well. How about yours?” A: “Well, I’m doing well in _____, but not in ______.” B: “Do you like your professors?” A: “Yeah, most of them are really cool!” B: “Oh, good for you!” _________________________________________________________ A: “So, do you like your ________ this semester? B: “Yes, I do. No, I don’t.” A: (make a response based on your partner’s answer)
Big Conversation • Start by asking a Yes / No question about a topic. • Ask Follow-Up questions (FUQs) to get more information from your partner. • Make sure they are logical – Don’t change topics! • Use your partner’s answer to make the next question.
Follow Up questions • There are 2 kinds of follow up questions. • Wh / How- Questions (who, what, where, when, why, how, how much, how many, how often, how long, which) • YES/NO questions Do you….? Did you….? Can you….? Are you….? Have you ever….?
Closing / Goodbye You must give a reason to end the conversation. It’s okay to lie! Examples:I’m sorry, but I have to go to class. I’m afraid I have an appointment. Oh look at the time! I have to meet my _____.
Example Conversation • A: Do you like drinking coffee? • B: Of course! • A: How often do you drink coffee? • A: I drink coffee almost everday! • A: Oh, really? Where do you usually drink coffee? • B: Well, usually go to Yan’s Coffee shop. Have you ever been there? • A: No, I haven’t. Where is it? • B: It’s in Seongundong, just across the bridge. They have live music on Friday night. Do you like listening to music? • A: Absolutely!! I love live music. How often do you go there for live music? • B: I usually go once or twice a month. • A: Cool. We’ll have to together sometime! • B: Oh no! I have to go to class now. • A: Okay, see you later!
