13th~17th century • Even before the spread of Islam and the development of agriculture in the land, the Mali people were hunters around the Sahara, when Sahara had abundant rainfall enough to allow forest to grow.
Sundiata the Lion Prince The Lion Prince Sundiata 13th century, created a unified state. The Lion Prince made the social law of Mali and controlled the regions as an Empire.
Farming and Trading society • The Mali society depended on the Niger River, because most of it was the Sahara desert. Niger River was their only source of fertile water that gave them food resource. Agriculture, and gold trade was the what the Mali society’s economy depended on. • Even before the Islamic spread, Niger River was a big trade route for the people of in Africa. • -They traded slaves, gold, pepper, salt, fabrics.
Early contacts with Muslims • The Muslim traders seeking for gold, ivory, and slave brought in Islam in the West Africa. • The traders that traveled the long desert to trade slaves and gold married women in the Mali area and spread the Islamic religion.
Spread of Islam • After the Mali king’s interactions with the out side world and their pilgrimage, the Mali kings became famous figures of European history writing. • Made Mali into one of the world's major cultural centers in Africa. • -Women earned more economic and political roles. They did not have to wear veils. • The Islamic influence allowed the Mali to have democratic citizenship and have tolerance. It also kept the powers separated within the governing leaders.
Increasing Influence • The kings of Mali built large Muslim mosques and temples to influence other city states. Buy building mosques and temples; the kings expanded their influenced over the other countries. • Polygamy always existed in Mali history, which increased the number of Islam in Mali
Fall of Mali powers • The divided powers eventually lead to civil wars 1337~1341 where the kings fought each other for more power. • These civil wars brought up power vacuum which encouraged coup d'états. The weakness of the official power and the big division of authority led Mali kingdoms to fall.
