PUTTING IN NEW FOUNDATIONS

This presentation highlights the transition from a service and policy-based approach to an organizing union, and the importance of a member-led equality strategy. The first response includes re-orientation courses for incoming equality committees, engagement with the Commission for Change, and the assessment of positive proposals. Tools for change are established, such as quotas on leading committees, the adoption of democratic processes, and the establishment of an additional intervention equality committee. The importance of equality proofing all policies, practices, and procedures is emphasized, along with the need for three-level awareness training for officers, staff, and lay activists. The next steps for 2011 include building a new national equality network, utilizing existing resources and skills, and achieving external support. The new focus for the network includes developing a strategy for divisional collective bargaining, utilizing equality as an organizing tool, and activist development/mentoring. The challenges faced include economic recovery, joined-up behavior, and union building.
