Why the change? • BA review early 2012 • Recommendations of the review aim to: • Enhance academic coherence of degree • Allow for fewer but more multi-disciplinary majors • Allow students to adopt a progression model that best suits their needs • Make clear links between learning outcomes of the majors, the course and the Monash graduate attributes
How has it changed? • Aim of renewing the majors is to implement: • Greater clarity about the learning outcomes and forms of assessment • Gateway units • Cornerstone units • Capstone units • Streams within majors
The changes explained • Three compulsory categories to be completed in a major • Chosen key units • Key units taught in Sem 1 and Sem 2 for mid-year entrants • Extended major option • One major (8 units); one minor (4 units); Arts electives (4 units); Open electives (8 units). • The 1st year Arts sequence has been removed
The categories explained • Gateway unit – 1st year foundation unit • Cornerstone unit – 2nd year unit allowing you to demonstrate a solid grasp of your study area • Capstone unit – 3rd year unit allowing you to demonstrate advanced knowledge of your major. Research project or internship.

Which degrees are affected? • All single and double degrees tagged with ‘Bachelor of Arts’ • Specialist degrees not affected, they will all have their own review • Diploma of Arts and Diploma of Languages affected

Study Areas • Reduced from 60 to 52 • Some areas of study now have streams options, eg: • Literary Studies > Literatures in English; Creative writing; International literatures • International studies > Asian Studies; European studies • Sociology > Gender studies
Music & Performance Auditions • New process from May 2013 • Only for students who, eg, are overseas & cannot attend in person • Drop box allows them to indicate cannot attend • Student contacts music school • Student is emailed link & voucher number • Student enters voucher number into system called CloudStor and drops electronic file into CloudStor
Internships – new in 2014 • Hands on industry experience • 3 – 4 weeks, min 144 hours • Funding available through Monash Abroad • Merit based prestigious program for 3rd year students • 12 credit points towards degree • Application process will begin Aug 2013 for Sem 1, 2014
Overseas opportunities • Prato, Italy • Accelerate studies • Complete up to a semester’s load of credit over summer or winter • Internship opportunities in 2014 • Monash University, Sunway campus, Malaysia • One or two semesters • Monash South Africa • One or two semesters • Study Abroad • 130 partners in 30 countries
