Adult Education and Literacy English Language Learner (ELL): An individual who has limited ability in reading, writing, speaking, or comprehending English, and whose native language is a language other than English; or who lives in a family or community environment where a language other than English is the dominant language.

  6. Adult Education and Literacy English Literacy and Civics Education Services (EL Civics): Education services provided to adult ELLs, including professionals with degrees or credentials in their native countries, to enable them to achieve competency in English and acquire the basic and more advanced skills needed to function effectively as parents, workers, and citizens in the United States.

  7. Adult Education and Literacy Impact on the Economy A 1% RISE IN LITERACY SKILL SCORES CAN BOOST LABOR PRODUCTIVITY BY AN ESTIMATED $225 BILLION PER YEAR INCREASED LITERACY CAN DECREASE U.S. ANNUAL HEALTHCARE COSTS BY AN ESTIMATED $230 BILLION PER YEAR

  8. Adult Education and Literacy EL Civics: Includes instruction in literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL), and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and civic participation and may include Workforce Training.

Adult Education and Literacy Integrated EL Civics: Provides education services to adult English Language Learners, including professionals with degrees and credentials in their native countries, and enables them to achieve competency in English and acquire the basic and more advanced skills necessary to function effectively as parents, workers, and citizens in the United States.

  10. Adult Education and Literacy Integrated EL Civics: • includes instruction in literacy and ESL; • includes instruction on the rights and responsibilities of citizenship and civic participation; • is provided in combination with IET, including AEL Activities, Workforce Preparation Activities, and Workforce Training.

  11. Adult Education and Literacy Integrated EL Civics (cont.): • is designed to prepare adult ELLs for, and place them in, unsubsidized employment in in-demand industries and occupations that lead to economic self-sufficiency; and • is integrated with Board and Workforce Solutions Office functions to carry out the activities of the program.

Adult Education and Literacy Fuel Education (Scope and Sequence): Week 3 October 16 – Hospitality/Tourism – Unit 3 Hotel Industry Unit Summary and Objectives • Describe different types of hotels. (Magazine Pictures/Power points) • Examine how most hotels are organized in terms of staff members. • Discuss the tasks and responsibilities of departments such as housekeeping, security, and the front office. Explore how room counts are generated and why they are used. • Discuss the practice of overbooking and its possible consequences.
