  1. Eight Years of E-learning on Water and Sanitation at UNESCO-IHE N. Trifunović, C.M Lopez-Vazquez, C.M. Hooijmans 30 May 2013

  2. Content • Introduction • Didactical approach and assessment • Target groups • Experiences from implementation • Conclusions

  3. Introduction • UNESCO-IHE in Delft: MSc (450), PhD (150), Short courses (300). • Need to increase the outreach. • Applications: MSc 1655+2003, Short courses 2197. • OLC education started in 2005 (PoWER). • 2013: 21 OLC, EEWT 7 (500 participants in 8 years).

  4. Didactical Approach and Assessment • Four months (study load 5 ECTS = 140 hours). • Compatible materials as in the programmes in Delft. • Take into consideration (potentially) slow Internet. Simplified applications (audio ppt, 15-20 min), hard copies of materials (books, DVDs). • Work as much as possible in asynchronous mode (different backgrounds and time zones).

  5. Purpose of 5th Symposium Video lecture, using MS Producer.

  6. Target Groups • Variable figures per OLC. • Less applicants from Africa/Asia eventually attend. • Increased attendance from Europe. • Mostly variable professional backgrounds and jobs. • Mostly variable ambitions and age (in the same OLC). • Lower percentages of females.

  7. EEWT OLC Offer • Modelling Sanitation Systems (MSS). • Biological Wastewater Treatment (BWT). • Solid Waste Management (SWM). • Ecological Sanitation (ES). • Constructed Wetlands for Wastewater Treatment (CWWT). • Cleaner Production and the Water Cycle (CPWC). • Water Transport and Distribution (WTD).

  8. Purpose of 5th Symposium Average number of applicants per year.

  9. Purpose of 5th Symposium Percentage of applicants attending the courses.

  10. Purpose of 5th Symposium Percentage of applicants and participants from L&MIC.

  11. Purpose of 5th Symposium Percentage of female participants.

  12. Experiences from Implementation • Enthusiastic start, soon diversified working tempo resulting in the lack of communication. • Three groups distinguished: (1) Constantly motivated, (2) Initially motivated, fading away (3) ‘Spectators’. • Internet access influences the working tempo. • The work delivered late (no exams), or not at all. • Lower percentages of completion (self-discipline?).

  13. Purpose of 5th Symposium Countries of origin of WTD OLC participants, 2005 – 2010 (Trifunović, 2009).

  14. Purpose of 5th Symposium Percentage of participants completing the OLC.

  15. Purpose of 5th Symposium Final evaluation, WTD OLC 2005 – 2006 (adapted from Trifunović, 2008).

  16. Conclusions • An OLC with a clear, broad topic tend to attract a higher number of participants. • Although lower, the fees for L&MIC are still an issue. • A focalised allocation of scholarships and financial benefits are needed to attract more females. • Self-discipline should improve if OLC is accredited. • Structured database and evaluation of OLCs needed.

  17. Purpose of 5th Symposium Thank you for your attention. Contact details: NemanjaTrifunović, PhD, MSc Associate Professor of Water Supply Engineering UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education n.trifunovic@unesco-ihe.org
