    1. Phantom Warrior Blended Training in Support of Full Spectrum Operations (Battalion and Below) Good afternoon. Thank-you for the opportunity to speak with you about III Corps and Fort Hood’s tremendous LVCG capabilities. Good afternoon. 2. LVC-ITE Capabilities – What We Can Do Today Training Environment Background – Our Reality Today Making the Best Use of What We have – A Gated Training Strategy Model Opportunities to Improve 21st Century Training I want to highlight our current LVC-ITE capabilities being used today and for incorporating a Blended Training model. Next, we will show the compressed training cycle we’ve been operating in over the past few years and how our LVCG capabilities have and continue to support this collective training process; though not currently in what can be termed a Blended Training environment. I’ll highlight how we now have an opportunity, as we transition from a 12-month to 12-month Dwell and compressed training management window to one along the 9-month to 27-month Dwell cycle, to focus on a more deliberate training management during the collective training window giving CDRs more time to tailor their training and supported with LVCG enablers. ”A Way” we think of getting at a more “Deliberate Training Management” framework is a Gated Training Strategy. Finally, we’ll offer some practical application examples and recommendations for future improvements to Blended Training. 3. Before I get into the brief, I’d like to first show you a short video that visually demonstrates some of the Live, Virtual, Constructive, and Gaming capabilities Fort Hood offers. Roll the video (~4 minutes in length). 5. Current dwell time is 12 months deployed and 12 months at homestation 12 months at homestation realistically means 6 months of training Short dwell times results in directed training, little training management and stovepipes, instead of a comprehensive Blending Training environment, that limits commanders ability to exercise their initiative HS – Home Station CTC – Combat Training Center STX – Situational/Staff Training Exercise CPX – Command Post Exercise MRX – Mission Rehearsal Exercise Current dwell time is 12 months deployed and 12 months at homestation 12 months at homestation realistically means 6 months of training Short dwell times results in directed training, little training management and stovepipes, instead of a comprehensive Blending Training environment, that limits commanders ability to exercise their initiative HS – Home Station CTC – Combat Training Center STX – Situational/Staff Training Exercise CPX – Command Post Exercise MRX – Mission Rehearsal Exercise

    6. With more time for collective training, unit’s will have a “window of opportunity” for a more “deliberate training management” focus during the collective training window. This is especially important given the constrained resource environment we will find ourselves operating within. If not deployed, CDR’s can sustain company maneuver and live fire skills while BNs and BCTs improve and sustain Battle Staff proficiencies. The extended dwell could be an institutional obstacle to effective training management if we don’t take advantage of a Deliberate Training Management model. “A Way” to achieve a deliberate training model and provide CDRs flexibility to tailor their training plans is with a Gated Training Strategy. 7. In order to ensure III Corps and Fort Hood units were thoroughly trained as possible before deployment, we developed a C-IED Gated Training Strategy (GTS) that aligned itself across the ARFORGEN phases. This model proved highly successful in individual and collective training preparations for C-IED operations and has become an Army-wide model for units going into theater. Our C-IED GTS model served as the impetus for developing the III Corps and Fort Hood GTS that will provide CDR’s and units a model to achieve mission readiness in whatever operational environment they may find themselves. 8. UNCLASSIFIED Several years ago we started with the concept of gunnery tables to develop gunnery tables to get at Counter-IED training. These gunnery tables turned out to be a “C-IED Gated Training Strategy”. FORSCOM Commander’s training guidance highlighted the use of a gated training strategy for C-IED training and cited Fort Hood’s strategy as a way to do this. We took this concept and modified it to take into account full spectrum training under the ARFORGEN construct. It provides a disciplined approach to training that attempts to take full advantage of the vast resources we have on Fort Hood to support training (sampling shown) It aims at integrating the stovepipes to conduct unit training to make the most of the resources we have. Effective training management will ensure achieve the objective of “Units prepared for full spectrum operations against today’s adversary.” This Gated Training Strategy is the cornerstone of my training strategy and training management guidance for this next Fiscal Year. 9. The III Corps & Ft. Hood Gated Training Strategy (GTS) model supports all III Corps Maneuver, Functional and Multi-functional organizations. The GTS is flexible enough to support units with different structures and training requirements during the ARFORGEN cycle to prepare each individual, collective team, crew, battle staff, and unit for Full-Spectrum Operations (FSO). 10. As we move forward in our training development with assurance of having to operate in an uncertain world environment and with increasingly constrained resources, Blended Training must become the training norm and we offer some “opportunities to improve” our future training. A few practical applications include: Increasing the use of Virtual/Gaming enablers for rehearsing live events like Fire Coordination Exercise (FCX). Another application is use of our Fixed Tactical Internet (FTI) which provides a fairly robust means for linking Blended Training. Exploring our linkage to the Central Technical Support Facility (CTSF) to integrate and test Army-wide, Joint and Coalition system capabilities in order to help minimize service interoperability problems and lead to improved TTPs for such things as Air Ground Integration and Battle Staff coordination. Recommendations for future Blended Training capabilities should consider such things as: Creation of a separate , firewalled training communications enclave network flexible enough to support commanders training requirements with their fielded combat communications systems with limited restrictions Combat systems with embedded training capabilities so Soldiers, crews and teams can truly train-as-they-fight . Linkage to the Brigade Modernization Command’s Army brigade modernization and network integration efforts to help integrate and shape training and training resources.
