Section 2: The Beginnings of Islam The Arabian Peninsula The Arabian Peninsula is a desert surrounded by seas. Its early inhabitants were Bedouin nomads who herded animals and led traders across the desert. They stopped at oases, some of which grew into trading centers. The Prophet Muhammad • According to Muslim tradition, Muhammad was a prophet whom God told to spread the word of the one true God. The people of Mecca were threatened by Muhammad’s message, but the prophet was welcomed in the city that would later be called Medina. Muhammad later returned to Mecca and helped to spread Islam there and throughout the Arabian Peninsula.

Byzantine and Muslim Civilizations Muslim Belief Muslims practice the Five Pillars of Islam and study the Quran, which contains God’s messages to Muhammad. The Quran teaches that men and women are spiritually equal. After the death of Muslim leader Uthman in 656, Muslims split into two groups over the issue of who should lead them. Shiites would follow only a direct descendant of Muhammad, while Sunnis thought any religious man of Muhammad’s tribe could lead them.
