1. Physical and Chemical Properties of Matter • used to classify and describe something
A characteristic you can observe without changing it to something else Physical Properties include: Color Density (the amount of stuff in a given space) Hardness Melting Point Boiling Point Changing of State 2. Physical Property
Something you can observe only when a substance changes to a different substance. Chemical Properties include: . Flambility If a substance will burn Oxidation If it will rust If they react with other substances 3. Chemical Properties
Changes the form or appearance of something, but doesn’t change what it is. Examples: Cutting paper Freezing water Flattening metal Molding clay 4. Physical Change
A change in matter that forms one or more new substances that are chemically different from the starting material Examples: Oxidizing Burning Tarnishing Digesting Food Cooking 5. Chemical Changes The main difference between a physical and chemical change is that after a chemical change the object is no longer the same substance.
6. Evidence of Chemical Change • When a Chemical change occurs there are several indicators that should alert that a chemical change could be occurring: • change in temperature • change in color • bubbles • light given off • sound • smoke • Formation of a precipitate (or a fine suspension of solid particles) When fireworks go off, there is a chemical change. The indicators of the change are: heat, color, light and sound.
When a chemical change occurs, one or more new substances is formed. Matter is neither created or destroyed, the elements just combine differently. One example is wood burning. 7. New Substance
Tarnishing Weather or not something will rust Color Tearing paper It reacts with water Changing from ice to water Density Identify each description as a(n): Physical property Chemical property Physical change Chemical change CPS Quiz
