Parts of a sentence (Review) • Subject: a person, place or thing. HINT To identify the subject of a sentence, ask yourself "who or what is doing the action?" • Verb: an action word. HINT To identify the verb in a sentence, ask yourself "what is the action?" or "what is being done here?" In some sentences, though, the verb is a "state of being." The verb "to be" in all its forms is an example of this. • Direct Object:a person or thing receiving the action
Example SENTENCES (parts of speech) • The general shrugged his shoulders and delicately ate a hot house grape.(TMDG) • One evening her husband came home with an exultant air, holding a large envelope in his hand. (The Necklace) • He indicated a metal path that struck off into green wilderness, over streaming swamp, among giant ferns and palms. (A Sound of Thunder)
