Why did Augustus divide the provinces? Old Province: • Great deal of fighting within the provinces • Barbarian invasions on the frontier towns • Provinces suffered wasted land and heavy taxes to fund Rome’s wars • Rome’s way of ruling the provinces was not efficient • Augustus decided to reform how provinces would be ruled
