  3. Augustus’ Rule • “restored the Republic” • put the consuls back into power • controlled the senate and the consuls • is called Princeps- the first citizen • Gave himself the powers of a tribune • 40 B.C. Julius Caesar is named a god

  4. Augustus and Marriage • First married to Scribonia • It was a political marrage • They didn’t like each other • Falls in love with Livia • She is the wife of Tiberius Claudius Nero • He happily divorces her • Augustus and Livia quickly marry • They have a long and loving marriage

  6. The Revitalization of Rome • Raised the birth rate for Roman citizens • Reduced the rate at which slaves could be freed • Enacted laws that: • Reduced extravagance • Punished single men • Punished married couples with few children • He lived his life as an example to these new Roman values

The revitalization of the Upper Class • He put the upper class to work. • The Empire needed a larger government that did more for it citizens. • He put people in charge of: • The water supply • Maintenance and construction of roads • Maintenance of public buildings • Controlling the Tiber’s flooding
