The Language Experience Approach to the teaching of reading. How ICT can be used to make it more accessible.
What is it? • It is an approach to reading in which the child’s own language and experiences is used to create reading material. • It is not a new idea but the computer and digital camera or scanner make the creation of attractive individual books very feasible.
Advantages • It integrates the four language processes. • It is child centered….brings new reader to the text rather than the other way around. • Aids comprehension…..the reader and composer are one and the same person. The child understands that text carries meaning • It is enjoyable and allows the child and his or her life to become known.
More advantages… • Highly motivating. • Link between home and school. • Boosts self esteem • Incorporates emotion and fun… something missing from low level commercially produces material. • Can be used to develop sight vocabulary and comprehension via cloze exercises.
Procedure for the use of ICT and the Language Experience Approach. • Explain to the child that our aim is to write our own book about themselves, their lives and interests. • Talk to the child eliciting information about him or herself. • Type as the child talks. • Make occasional mistakes so as to show the delete facility of the word processor.
