  26. As you start interviewing for your first job out of college, come prepared to each interview • You want to stand out in an interview because employers talk with several candidates • Prepare, Prepare, Prepare – research the company, the position and talk to anyone you know from the organization before the interview • Initiate the handshake – work on a firm, but not too firm, handshake and initiate it when you first meet someone from the employer • Non-verbal is as important as verbal – what you communicate non-verbally can often convey more than what you say so be sure you have an interested and pleasant facial expression and sit like you are engaged in the conversation and don’t slouch • Be friendly to everyone you meet – regardless of the person’s role at the company, be courteous and friendly • Be a “team player” – look for ways to show how you’ve been a team player because more than likely you will be asked to work on a team in your new job • Dress professionally – be sure your suit is pressed and clean, your nails are clean and get a fresh haircut • Ask good questions – prepare questions you want to ask the interviewer and use the questions to demonstrate your knowledge of their business, industry and the economy • Keep responses brief – make sure you don’t carry on too long on one response but still convey the entire message and if the interviewer wants more information he or she will ask

  27. Clearly communicate your responses to questions by using a consistent framework • Use the P.A.R. Method when responding to questions about your past experiences

  28. Your goal for growing your career should be to acquire skills that allow you to bridge the gaps commonly found between IT and the Business Business IT Alignment Gap Career Progression Business IT Executives Strategies Mastery Expertise Directors Organizations Proficiency Managers Processes Competency Developers Applications Novice Effectiveness Others First Relationship & Sales Business of IT Leadership Core Skills Mastery comes from continuously building skills, knowledge and habits through just the right experience – there are no short cuts

  30. You may not realize it but college is the ideal place to start building your network • Everyone should either join their Alumni association or at least have a directory of former students on their desktop after they graduate • How plugged in are you? • What was the last event you attended? • Are you actively keeping up with at least 20 different people from your schools? • Business School Clubs are key places to develop relationships with future leaders and demonstrate your leadership potential • How often are you attending meetings? • Is there an opportunity for you to speak? • Could you share something that your group would find valuable? • Social clubs are places where relationships are grown • Intramural teams, sororities, fraternities, social clubs • These are sometimes hard to penetrate but strong bonds are formed when you do • These are great places to find people with common interest and build strong alliances • The synergy that exists between individuals with common hobbies is significant • What are the things you are interested in beyond school work? • Hunting, fishing, boating, stamp collecting, investing, whatever? • This allows you to broaden your network across a large spectrum • Keep up with your network online – there are so many tools to help you do this

  31. In order to be successful, you must consistently do what comes unnaturally • Practice, practice, practice • Adopt a role model - find someone you feel is a good networker and learn from them • Take lessons to build your confidence in speaking • Classes at Baylor • Toastmasters • Dale Carnegie • National Speakers Association • Keep taking lessons - you are never too good to stop sharpening your saw • Join up • Don’t be afraid to take that step and join • Just about any group offers the chance for making personal contacts and achieving personal growth • Have a little faith • In yourself • In the group • Dale Carnegie probably summed it up best: “You can make more friends in two months by becoming really interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get other people interested in you. Which is just another way of saying that the way to make a friend is to be one.”
