8. International Conference and Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design & Construction™ (PDC)
The first PDC was held in 1991 in San Francisco, CA and consisted of 325 attendees
The 2009 PDC was held in Phoenix AZ with over 1,212 attendees and 339 companies creating the Technical Exhibition
In 2005 and 2006, Tradeshow Weekly magazine recognized the PDC as one of the 50 Fastest growing tradeshows in the country! ASHE’s Major Accomplishments …the International Conference and Exhibition on Health Facility Planning, Design and Construction, also known as the PDC. This Conference is the premiere Conference for this area. The PDC was developed to counteract a design and construction program being given to administrators back in the late 1980’s. The premise of their program was to drive a wedge in between the owner, architect and contractor. Therefore ASHE, in collaboration with the AIA/AAH, created the collaborative nature message of the current PDC. This Conference has grown every year since it began.

Number of Certificate holders at the end of 2008: 4,116
Coming Soon! ASHE Credentialed Construction Certification through the AHA-CC A more recent achievement was the creation of the Healthcare Construction Certificate program, which is a two-day program where faculty educate how to properly do construction within a healthcare facility. This program was developed in 2001 and launched in March of 2002. At the end of 2002 there were 371 Certificate holders; by the end of 2006 there were over 5,300!A more recent achievement was the creation of the Healthcare Construction Certificate program, which is a two-day program where faculty educate how to properly do construction within a healthcare facility. 13. New Resources for ASHE MembersAs your trusted resource, ASHE works to provide you with the information and tools you need to manage the health care physical environment. We are happy to provide you with two new members-only documents that you can add to your ASHE "toolbox":
Pre-move and Occupancy Coordination Checklist
Don't plan a move without using ASHE's Pre-move and Occupancy Coordination Checklist. Developed by ASHE's 2008 Planning, Design and Construction Committee, this incredible tool will help you supervise the activities associated with pre-move and occupancy of a facility. This document allows you to monitor and evaluate your progress and expenses all in one place.
Sprinkler System Valve Manual TemplateA sprinkler system can be complex with many different zones and valves. Some of those valves may be easily to locate. Others may be in more obscure locations. If there is an inadvertent sprinkler activation, or when maintenance or system modifications are being performed, it is imperative that sprinkler system valves be properly identified and can be quickly located.
14. Codes , Standards & Advisory Information
ASHE resources for code and standard compliance include:
Ask ASHE; the "members-only" question and answer source for compliance
A Web-Based Resource Library
Timely Codes & Standard Alerts
ASHE Resource Personnel (Doug Ericson,Dale Woodin)
ASHE List Serve
Health Advisory ( H1N1-Swine Flu)
ASHE Guidance Statement to Membership
New Resources for ASHE Members
Weekly Building Health Newsletter

Recent ASHE advocacy actions include:
Re-engineering the Standard for Health Care Facilities (NFPA 99)
Gaining relief from stringent run hour limitations in EPA’s Generator standard
Defeating the NFPA’s proposal for annual testing of fire and smoke dampers
Currently (CMS Fire/Smoke damper test waiver)
Improving health care practitioners’ hand hygiene and reducing infections through collaboration with CMS, JCAHO, CDC, APIC, ICC, and NFPA to amend fire safety codes to allow widespread use of alcohol hand-rubs ASHE is your source for direction on key issues affecting the healthcare engineering industry. ASHE voices your needs as a healthcare facility professional. Through representation on various regulatory and codes and standards setting bodies, ASHE is involved and takes the lead in finding ways for hospitals to deliver the highest quality of care in the safest facilities in a cost-effective manner. Through this process, obsolete standards have been repealed and performance-based standards based on actual safety outcomes have been adopted. 16. Advocacy
ASHE advocacy efforts defeated the 1999 NFPA proposal to retroactively require all hospitals to have a complete sprinkler system.
Had it been passed it would have cost millions for nearly every hospital in America to retroactively install a fire sprinkler system throughout the entire facility.
It's estimated that in the past 30 years, ASHE has saved healthcare facilities approximately $62 billion in direct capital costs for compliance with a number of standards and regulation-making bodies!
ASHE’s Major Accomplishments ASHE’s advocacy team boasts a number of great triumphs – in the past 30 years it’s estimated that ASHE has saved over $62 billion for healthcare facilities! An example of just one was when the NFPA proposal for retroactively requiring all hospitals to be fully equipped with sprinklers was defeated. These strong efforts saved thousands of facilities from having to immediately retrofit their entire facility.ASHE’s advocacy team boasts a number of great triumphs – in the past 30 years it’s estimated that ASHE has saved over $62 billion for healthcare facilities! 27. ASHE July 31-Aug. 1st Board Meeting Summary Dual Membership Fees
The board discussed the potential loss of hospital based members who are faced with the decision to belong to ASHE or to the local chapter. Members have reported that their facility will only fund membership in one professional organization putting them in a position where they must choose and, as a result, both ASHE and the local chapters are losing members. An option to assist members pay once by including both national and chapter dues in a single payment was explored.
ASHE/AHA and the Green Initiative: The American Hospital Association has ask ASHE to participate in a series of webinars marketed to healthcare facility CEO’s. ASHE work on energy efficiency/sustainability was a major driver in this request.
ASHE Education Foundation: The board is investigating the option to expand the scope of the ASHE Education Foundation to include research.
Clinical/Biomedical Engineering Constituency: To assist the society’s clinical/biomedical engineering constituency , ASHE will be initiating conversation with the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentations. (AAMI)
28. Board summary continued: Sustainability Statement:
A document has been developed by the Sustainability Committee that is a statement of ASHE’s stance on sustainability. Marketing efforts to the membership, healthcare facilities (managers & chief executive officers) and strategic stakeholders.
