  1. September 16th: "Where do I find those databases again?" and other basic matters – plus today’s Tip to Amaze!

  2. Where are they…? • Problem solve: databases come from the library, therefore – where should you look for them? • The Library homepage! From here to: • Research Guides  Business  Business Resources page • List of All Business Databases • Blackboard courses: Library Resources* *sometimes hiding under Course Tools

  3. Basic tools of problem solving • Engage brain: Think. Analyze your information need. Maybe think one step above your specific information need* • On web pages: slow down and really look – read what’s on the page. “Use your eyes.” • Make sure your eyes are connected to your brain. *e.g., rather than “I need to know Campbell’s market share for soup,” think: “I need a database with consumer market research”

  4. More basics: wireless networks • UR_Internal_Secure is good. The “wireless password” for that network is URWireless. • Then launch a web browser & log in with your NetID and password. • UR_Connected is even better. It will connect you whenever you are in range (without having to log in each time) • Find complete instructions for wireless here:http://www.rochester.edu/it/wireless • Just like being here, wherever you are: VPN • http://www.rochester.edu/it/vpn/

  5. Today’s tip to amaze! • Check headlines, read articles in today’s WSJ (or any day up to 2 weeks back) • How? • News Pages in Factiva! • Instructions on the Research Tips page • Bad news: you have to go through the library site and into Factiva every time – can’t bookmark it. • Good news: free to you!

  6. Join us next week, Sept. 23, 5:00pm for: "All I hear is Target List, Target List!! But Capital IQ isn’t doing it for me – what else can I try?“ Your problem-solving pros will show you how to bend other company databases to your will!
