  4. Gas Giants or Terrestrials? Gas Giants Terrestrial Planets Dense and Rocky Planets Primarily composed of silicate rocks. Mercury Venus Earth Mars • Large planet that is not mainly made of rock or other solid matter. • Made mostly of hydrogen and helium. • Jupiter • Saturn • Uranus • Neptune

  5. Inner or Outer Planets? Inner Planets Outer Planets • Planets closest to the sun. • Terrestrial Planets • Planets furthest from the sun. • Gas Giants

  6. Mercury • Planet nearest to the sun. • 8th largest planet. (4,879 kilometers) • Densest of the planets. • Has an enormous iron core. • It takes less than 88 Earth days for Mercury to orbit the sun.

  7. Venus • Second planet from the sun. • 6th largest planet (12,104 kilometers) • Similar in size and closeness to the Earth. • Extremely hot and deadly atmosphere. • Its atmosphere is made mostly of carbon dioxide

  8. Earth • Third planet from the sun. • 5th largest planet (12,756 kilometers) • Only world in the universe known to host life. • Liquid water sets Earth apart from all other planets.

Mars • Fourth planet from the Sun. • 7th largest planet (6,794 kilometers) • More like earth than any other planet. • Mountain caps & valleys, polar ice caps, a solid rocky surface, and Martian Volcano's.. • Has seasons, an atmosphere with clouds, winds and dust storms. • Mars outshines every other planet apart from Venus.

Jupiter • Fifth planet from the sun. • Largest planet in our solar system (142,984 kilometers) • Atmospheres consists of about 84% hydrogen and 15% helium, with small amounts of acetylene, ammonia, ethane, methane, phosphine, and water vapor. • Rotates faster than any other planet in the solar system.

  11. Saturn • Sixth planet from the sun. • 2nd largest planet (120,536 kilometers) • Has seven thin flat rings around it made of billions of pieces of of rocks and dust. • The atmosphere of Saturn is made mostly of Hydrogen and Helium.

  12. Uranus • Seventh planet from the sun. • 3rd largest planet (51,118 kilometers) • Very cold world tipped on its side. • Surrounded by 11 very faded rings. • Has 27 known satellites.

  13. Neptune • Eighth planet from the sun. • 4th largest planet (49,528 kilometers) • Colder twin to Uranus. • Blue ball made of hydrogen, methane, ammonia, and water. • Is the stormiest planet. • Has thin dark rings, but they rings are incomplete.
