  1. Junior Year timeline and important reminders 2018-19

  2. Welcome to junior year! • The next two years will go by very fast. The best thing to do to keep yourself from stressing out is to keep on top of everything. This month by month time line alone with important reminders and tips will help make this year go by smoothly and set you up for a great senior year!

  3. September • Attend the College Fair on September 12th in the gym. Talk to various colleges, trade schools and military representatives that you may have an interest in. Use this time wisely!!! • Juniors will get three college visit days during the year that you can take to look at schools you might be interested in. By December of your junior year, you should be narrowed down to 6-8 schools. • If you are 4 year college bound, guidance suggests that you take the PSAT. This is used as an indicator on how you would score on the ACT, which you will take in April. The PSAT test will be October 10th from 8-12. • Sign up sheet is on the bulletin board in the 200 wing hallway under testing. This is limited to the first 30 students who sign up.

  4. Act test prep site Juniors will start ACT test prep in their advisories this month. Test prep will be done on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays. • In your advisories, you will be using the ACT Academy website to prep for the ACT. This website contains quiz questions in all 4 major subject areas and gives you instant results after the quiz. It also gives you explanations and videos to help you with the questions you missed. • https://academy.act.org/ • Create a user name and password that you can remember!! Link crew members will be in the classrooms on the first few days to help juniors with this process and show students how to navigate the website. • STUDY FOR THIS TEST!!!!!!!

  5. NCAA/NAIA ELIGIBILITY • Athletes that have decided that they would like to compete in college athletics at either an NAIA or NCAA school must meet certain criteria in order to do so. These requirements are beyond what is required for our graduation (NCAA) and you MUST declare that you would like to be NCAA or NAIA eligible during your junior year. Counselors will then review your transcript and make plans for your junior/senior year schedule. NAIA and NCAA requirements are as follows:

  6. October • Colleges will start to schedule individual visits in guidance. Take advantage of these visits and meet with the admissions rep one on one. College visits will be announced during announcements and will be posted on the bulletin board outside of guidance under College Info. • If you signed up to take the PSAT, this test is October 10th. • During October, Mrs. Collins will meet with each junior individually to talk about plans after high school. This will be done during your advisory or study hall. • Continue studying for the ACT in your advisories and on your own. Additional resources are available at www.actstudent.org or in guidance. STUDY FOR THIS TEST!!!!!

  7. November/December • Colleges will continue to schedule individual visits in guidance. Take advantage of these visits and meet with the admissions rep one on one. College visits will be announced during announcements and will be posted on the bulletin board outside of guidance under College Info. • If you have colleges that you would like to visit, please take advantage of the college visit days that are given to you. You MUST have Mrs. Collins approve your college visit before you go. She will sign the note that you give to attendance letting them know that you will be missing school. • Visit with seniors, teachers, parents, and former students about college and life after high school. • Continue studying for the ACT in your advisories and on your own. Additional resources are available at www.actstudent.org or in guidance. STUDY FOR THIS TEST!!!!! • By December, you should be narrowed down to 6-8 colleges. If you are military bound, you will need to take the ASVAB. This test is November 27th from 8-12. Please sign up in guidance with Mrs. Collins. Limited to 12 students.

  8. January/February • Colleges will continue to schedule individual visits in guidance. Take advantage of these visits and meet with the admissions rep one on one. College visits will be announced during announcements and will be posted on the bulletin board outside of guidance under College Info. • If you have colleges that you would like to visit, please take advantage of the college visit days that are given to you. You MUST have Mrs. Collins approve your college visit before you go. She will sign the note that you give to attendance letting them know that you will be missing school. • Continue studying for the ACT in your advisories and on your own. Additional resources are available at www.actstudent.org or in guidance. STUDY FOR THIS TEST!!!!! • If you took the PSAT, Mrs. Collins will go over the results with you when she receives them.

  9. March/april • Continue studying for the ACT in your advisories and on your own. Additional resources are available at www.actstudent.org or in guidance. STUDY FOR THIS TEST!!!!! • ACT TEST IS APRIL 2ND AT 8:00 IN THE GYM. EVERY JUNIOR WILL TAKE THIS TEST!!!! • You will need a number 2 pencil, calculator, and an ID on testing day. • Colleges will continue to schedule individual visits in guidance. Take advantage of these visits and meet with the admissions rep one on one. College visits will be announced during announcements and will be posted on the bulletin board outside of guidance under College Info.

  10. May/june/july • If you are taking Advanced Biology, the AP test will be in May. Additional info will be given to you in class. • ACT scores should begin to arrive this month. They will be sent to your house. • By the end of your junior year, you should be narrowed down to 5 colleges. Take college visits over the summer during preview days (listed on the college’s website) and talk to recent graduates about their experiences in college. • The summer before your senior year is a great time to start looking at what career you might be interested in. Talk to businesses about job shadowing or working at the business during the summer. • If you are NAIA or NCAA bound for athletics, you must register with the eligibility center before you can accept a scholarship. Go to https://www.playnaia.org/ (NAIA) or https://web3.ncaa.org/ecwr3/ (NCAA) to register. There is a fee for both. • Consider who you would like to write letters of recommendation for you for scholarships. Great choices are teachers, counselors, employers, church pastors/youth leaders or anyone that knows you well that is not related to you. Should have at least 5 people in mind. • If you would like to retake the ACT, you will need to register at www.actstudent.org . Test dates for June and July (test is not given in Sidney) are June 8th (registration deadline May 3rd) or July 13th (registration deadline June 14th). There is a fee now to take the test.
