  3. Body Systems • Systems in the body that are responsible for specific functions (i.e. Circulatory System)

  4. Circulatory System • Transports gases, nutrients, and waste throughout the body!

  5. Respiratory System • Gas Exchange • Oxygen (O2) in • Carbon Dioxide (CO2) out

  6. Digestive System • Breaks down food, releases energy, rids the body of waste from food

  7. Excretory System • Filters metabolic waste from the blood, stores and releases waste

  8. Skeletal System • Provides structure, support, and protection

  9. Muscular System • Allows movement and provides support • Three different types • Cardiac (i.e. heart) • Skeletal (i.e. biceps) • Smooth (i.e. stomach lining)

  10. Nervous System • Responds to the environment

  11. Integumentary System(your skin) • Provides protection from the environment (i.e. skin blocks UV rays) • Regulates the body temperature • THE FIRST LINE OF DEFENSE

  12. Immune System • Primary defense against foreign substances • Bacteria • Viruses • Fungi • Parasites

  13. Endocrine System • Produces hormones that regulate the metabolic function of all cells • Cholesterol • Testosterone • Estrogen

  14. Reproductive System • Allows the continuation of the species • Produces sex cells • Passes traits (genes) down to the next generation

  15. Summarize your thoughts… • On the bottom of your notes, summarize what you learned today about body systems.

  18. Arthropods • Segmented bodies (usually 3 bodies) • Jointed appendages • Exoskeleton
