  2. Angolan Education Education represents a critical element in the multi-faceted development of the human being. As it increases the individual’s opportunities within society it is also the essential foundation for economic growth because it improves the quality and the quantity of human capital that is available in the process of development of society.

  3. Expanding the network of schools Between 2008 and 2010 there was a capacity increase in admissions of the Educational System. This period became known as the general reform of the educational system and included the implementation of new educational materials. The extension of this process which began in 2006 started with the first grades of each level of education and more specifically with the 1st, 7th and 10th grades. The final year of implementation of the system was in 2011 with the 6th, 9th and 12th grades respectively.

Improvements in the Quality of Teaching: At the Primary School level Increase in the number of classrooms from 4 to 6 (compulsory) Increase in the number of hours dedicated to Portuguese and Mathematics from the 1st to the 6th grade Introduction of new disciplines: The Environment, Arts, Music, Moral and Civic education from 1st to 6th grade Introduction of 7 national languages on an experimental basis Secondary Level First cycle of secondary school: 7th, 8th and 9th grade Introduction of manual skills Introduction of foreign language classes, focus on mathematics

Improvements in the Quality of teaching Second Cycle of Secondary ( High School) : Increase in the number of years ( 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th year ) Introduction of new subjects Introduction of 2 programs in language instruction: English and French FOCUS ON THE TEACHER: Give particular recognition to the Teacher: Encourage the development of additional skills to be more effective professionally Modernisation of Instruction Manuals to improve learning and the quality of teaching

  6. IMPROVEMENTS IN SERVICES TO STUDENTS: SCHOOL FEEDING • Type of meal provided: • A snack composed of milk or yoghurt, fortified biscuits or bread and a seasonal fruit according to region. • A hot meal (porridge) • Potable water

  7. School Feeding Program • Financial support • The School Feeding program is financed by: • a) Angola’s General Budget. • b) By national and international partners. • C) By USDA and J.A.M.- Joint Aid Management

JAM AND ADPP: Working together to support Primary School Education in Angola • ADPP’s strength is in teacher training through their EPF centers: • They’ve been training Angolan primary school teachers in more than 12 centers throughout the country for 25 years. • By mid 2011, ADPP trained 4,093 primary school teachers of which 17.4% are women. • ADPP has monitors and has been working with school gardens and has been promoting nutrition education. • JAM ‘s strength is on the ground. With 25 monitors and 4 supervisors they cover the 430+ schools where CSB is distributed throughout Benguela Province. Each school is visited 2 to 3 times a month. • More than 220,000 children receive school meals during the 170 days of the school year. • JAM Monitors working with ADPP monitors interact with the community in the area of school gardens and earth boxes.

Angolan Education: A partnership between Public & Private schools and NGOs “The State guarantees that education can be effective if” Attention is focused on the student in primary school through additional programs such as: Educational Materials, School feeding and health coverage.   10. Greater access to Education Number of registered students: In 2004 there were 4,393,497 registered students in Angola and in 2010 the number of registered students reached 6,168,454. The average number of students registered between 2004 and 2010 came to 5,325,619. In 2011 the number of registered students reached 6,741,297 Network of Schools: During this period of educational reform the total number of classrooms reached 53,592 by the end of 2010. Number of Schools: By the end of 2011 the total number of schools reached 12,532 of which 10,730 were primary schools

  11. Since 2008 the Angolan Government has developed a program known the School as a Friend of the Child. What does this mean? A School known as Friend of the Child promotes the rights of the child and: Welcomes all children regardless of gender, race, age, physical or mental condition Is concerned with the well being of students before, during and after classroom hours Encourages participation, creativity, self esteem and the expression of opinions Teaches children how to learn and takes into account the needs of the child before those of adults involved in the education process Uses dialogue, respect and care as teaching instruments so that all can learn

  12. “The School as a Friend of the Child” project is a new concept for teachers and heads of schools to encourage quality educationFor it to succeed, the training and teaching process needs to be efficient and the school needs to be secure; it must protect and implement the rights of the child.The relationship between the school and the community must be binding especially if the school is an institution that fulfils its social obligations which is to educate and develop human resources.” Dr Pinda Simão, Angolan Minister of Education
