  3. CUSTOMARY INTRODUCTION To College Biology

  4. Introduction to 21st Century SCIENCE

  5. 20th Century SCIENCE

  6. 20th Century Science • E. Schrödinger – Quantum Mechanics / Wave function • M. Planck – Quantum theory / Black Body Radiation • M. Curie – Radioactivity / Curium (# 96) • W. Heisenberg – Uncertainty Principle / NA • N. Bohr – Manhattan Project / Atomic Model of Protium • A. Einstein – Special Relativity / E = mc2

  7. Molecular Biology • Watson & Crick (1953) • Rosalind Franklin • M. Wilkins, & R. Gosling

  8. Alba – GFP bunny • Expired in 2002 • “Transgenic art” • AP Lab #6

  9. Supermouse

  10. Polygamy • Polygamous voles (rodents) can be genetically modified to behave monogamously • Some human males have the identical genetic marker as the polygamous voles • Guess what they have a difficult time doing? • Why did the researchers not identify the polygamous gene marker in women?

  11. 2 Quick Questions (rhetorical, of course) 1. Should we genetically modify males that have the polygamous genetic marker? 2. There are genetic markers for intelligence. If you could, would you genetically modify yourself for increased intelligence?

  12. Human Genome Project • Completed in 2003 • Joint Genome Institute (Walnut Creek, CA) • Sequenced entire human genome (DNA) • Cost $2.7 billion • 2004, Celera (J. Craig Venter) = $300,000,000 (11%) • 2010, Illumina (San Diego, CA) = $14,500 (0.0005%) • 2013, $1,000 or less (estimate)

  13. 21st Century Therapies • Gleevec – Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia • 1 pill a day • Sprycel & Tasigna • BrCa-1 and BrCa-2 gene tests for breast and ovarian cancer • In 2010, Oncept DNA Vaccine • Canine Oral Melanoma • Transdermal application • June 2010, “siRNA ‘Cure’ for Ebola?” (Geisbert et al.) • May 20, 2010, first “synthetic” life form is created

  14. “We are now part of an early radical biological revolution that will dwarf the industrial revolution.” -- Julian Savulescu (Oxford University)

  15. Futurama • Juan Enriquez • TED Talks (www.ted.com) • http://www.ted.com/talks/juan_enriquez_shares_mindboggling_new_science.html • Cell Generation • Tissue Generation • Robots • Homo Evolutis

  16. Introduction to AP BIology

  17. Exit Interview Comments • “…take the class only if you enjoy biology or the sciences.” • “If he/she doesn’t wish to go into the field of science, I’d highly dissuade them from taking the course.” • “If a student is only taking a course to have it on her transcript then she will have a horrible time.” • “…you must learn a ton of information in a short period of time.”

  18. Page 2 • “AP Biology is nothing like honors Biology.” • “…the teacher should have removed students from the class who were not up to the standards of the course.” • “Some people played on the computer or did not pay attention in class. Why are they still here?”

  19. 2009 AP Biology Results •  Pass Rate = 74% • “5”s = 37% • Students = 43

  20. Why this class is difficult… 1. Biology knowledge base is deficient  How many years ago did you take Honors Biology? 2. Honors Biology ≠ AP Biology 3. 55 Chapters (1,230 pages) 4. 3 credits vs. 8 credits

  21. Why this class not difficult… 1. Clear expectations • Vocabulary & Objectives 2. Information is readily available 3. Course Materials sourced from 3 Biology textbooks 4. Course materials are easily accessible 5. Few complicated concepts

  22. What is a College Level Course? • Student-Driven Learning • Role of teacher is to highlight some important points • Will NOT cover every concept in class • “students are expected to work independently outside the class”

  23. Announced Assignments

  24. Class Discussions • You WILL be called on to attempt an answer • I want to hear what you have to say • Make all questions and comments relevant to the content discussion • If your question is off topic, write it down and ask it later
