  2. Statistics From Today • 13% of teens have had vaginal sex by the age of 15 • On average young people have sex at about the age of 17, but don’t marry until their mid-twenties. Nearly a decade exposed to increased risk of STIs and unwanted pregnancy • A sexually active teen that doesn’t use contraceptives has a 90% chance of getting pregnant within a year • Majority of sexually active teens used contraceptives the first time they have sex (79% of females and 87% of males) • The condom is the most common used contraceptive- 68% of females and 82% of males use them

Comstock Law • 1873- illegal to send contraceptive devices and information through the mail • 20 states pass similar restrictions • Connecticut “Any person who will use any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purpose of preventing conception shall be fined not less than fifty dollars or imprisoned not less than sixty days nor more than one year or be both fined and imprisoned.”

  11. Estelle Griswold Vs. Connecticut • 1965- Estelle fought for the right of married couples to be able to plan their sex life “Right of Privacy” • Won the case

Religious Views • Catholic Church and all Protestant denominations believed it was morally wrong to use any form of contraception • 1930s- Anglican Church allowed contraception • All other Protestant denominations soon followed • Today Catholic Church still bans contraception • Only natural methods are acceptable

  13. Discussion Questions • Do you think the advancement in birth control has lead to an increase in participation of sexual activity? • Do you think the level of acceptance and availability of birth control has lead to a decrease in the price for contraceptives?
