Today’s Schedule December 8-9, 2010 Agenda: 1. Lifecycle of a Star 2. Galaxies 3. Origin of the Universe Homework: Test Review Announcements: Comp Book Check is coming – get your comp book up to date!!! Test next Wednesday! Essential Questions: How does a star change during its existence? What are the types of galaxies? Where in the universe is our sun?
Card Sort: Shapes of Galaxies • Astronomers classify galaxies by their shape, and that is your job today. • Your group will have 5 minutes to categorize the 12 pictures of galaxies by shape. • Be prepared to explain why your group organized the galaxies the way you did.
Card Sort: Shapes of Galaxies Elliptical Spiral Irregular • Astronomers classify galaxies by the following three shapes: • Spiral – pinwheel shape • Elliptical – oval shape • Irregular – no definite shape • Classify your cards again now that you know the 3 types of galaxies
Shapes of Galaxies Spiral – pinwheel shape Card E is an example of a spiral galaxy. Elliptical – oval shape Card J is an example of an elliptical galaxy. Irregular – no definite shape Card I is an example of an irregular galaxy.
Modeling Galaxies Dump a small amount of sand onto your construction paper. Move the sand around to create the shape of a spiral galaxy. What does each grain of sand represent? If this is the Milky Way where is the sun?
Modeling Galaxies In your model, EVERY GRAIN OF SAND IS A STAR! Our star is the Sun, and planets in the Solar System revolve around the Sun which is located on one of the arms of the Milky Way.
Modeling Galaxies Astronomers believe there are hundreds of billions of galaxies in our universe but the exact number is not known. There are about 10,000 galaxies visible from the image of Hubble Deep Field. There are approximately 100-300 million stars in our Milky Way Galaxy. At most 8,479 are visible from Earth.
Modeling Galaxies Rearrange your sand to make an elliptical galaxy. What shape does it look like? Make an irregular galaxy. Do all irregular galaxies look similar to each other?
