Hernando de Soto • Hernando de Soto was an explorer from Spain. • He was the first European to visit Georgia. • He sailed directly from Spain and landed on the coast of Florida in 1539.
De Soto’s reason for coming to the New World was for gold. • Do you feel that De Soto’s search for gold was reason enough to rob/kill Native Americans? Explain.
De Soto traveled all through what is known as the Southeast today.
How do you feel De Soto’s troops felt about being led around the southeast for three years with nothing to show for it? Opinions?
De Soto’s most important contributions (negative and positive) were: • Exploration • Destroying Indian Culture • Documenting Native American Culture
De Soto’s party contributed to the demise and collapse of the Native American culture through WARFARE and DISEASE

France • The French came to the New World in search of gold in 1562. • They started a colony called Charlesfort. • The explorers ran out of supplies and food so they sent a ship back to France for more supplies. • When the ship returned in 1565, the settlers had left. • They also founded a colony called Fort Caroline in what is today known as Florida.
Spain • First came to the New World in search of wealth. • Did not want competition from the French so they destroyed Fort Caroline and set up a mission in 1568. • Missions were set up to spread religion and integrate Native Americans into Spanish culture. It was also a place for trading goods. • In 1684, the mission period ended. Missions were left empty. Slave revolts and English raids destroyed the rest.
England • Came for two reasons: gold and spread religion. • Great Britain and Spain were enemies. • In 1588, the Spanish Armada, a large fleet of ships was launched against England. • The British defeated the Spanish Armada giving them control of the seas and opening the way for exploring the Americas. • This led to the decline of Spanish power in the Americas.
England • England came for gold but realized they could make money off items like copper and furs. • They also began enslaving Native Americans and trading them. • The slave trade resulted in the deaths of many Native Americans.
