Human Arbovirus testing • Testing of all meningitis and encephalitis cases occurring between May 1- Nov. 30 • Free testing at OLS with the complete panel (WNV, EEE, LAC, SLE) • Submit yellow cards, necessary lab results, and the arbovirus investigation forms on all probable and confirmed cases

Dead Bird Reporting • Dead bird reporting will continue throughout the active surveillance period (May 1-Nov 30). • Use the dead bird log to keep track of all dead birds reported in the county. • At the end of each week (Friday) compile the dead bird reports and fax (304-558-6335) or email (westnile@wvdhhr.org) the dead reporting form to IDEP. • Report dead birds by the categories “Corvid (Blue Jay, Crow or Raven)” and “other”. • Report dead birds found by zip code region • If you receive notification of a cluster of dead birds, please report it to your local Department of Natural Resources.

Dead Bird Testing • Dead bird testing will be done at the WV Office of Laboratory Services for the first time this year. • OLS will only be accepting oral swab specimens from dead birds collected in the field. • We recommend that counties only send in specimens from dead crows, ravens, blue jays and birds of prey (owls, hawks, eagles, etc.). However, OLS will accept specimens from all speciesof dead birds with no obvious signs of trauma (unless funding becomes a limiting factor). • Oral swabs from fresh specimens, less than 24 hours old, without signs of decay should be submitted according to the protocol.

Dead Bird testing Cont…. • Obtain latitude and longitude information on each bird submitted. • After dead bird testing is up and running at OLS, it will continue (even after one positive is found in a county, the county should continue to submit specimens) throughout the state through November 30th and possibly year round if there is need. • Through continued testing, counties can track clusters or hot spots of West Nile activity and can monitor activity peaks and troughs at various times throughout the season.

  16. Equine testing • Serologic testing of symptomatic equines for WNV and EEE will be available at OLS this year • Veterinarians should contact OLS for collection procedures and shipping requirements.

Mosquito Surveillance • Arbovirus testing for adult mosquitoes will be available at OLS this year • Breeding site identification, larval surveillance and breeding site elimination • Begin tracking mosquito complaint calls to help identify problem areas that may be candidates for adult surveillance • Use dead bird reporting and testing results to drive mosquito surveillance and adult collection for testing
