Responsive Classroom • Important to know children individually, culturally, and developmentally • Academic learning happens best within a positive social context, much attention is paid to social skills • Increases social skills • Establishes positive classroom climate • Increases learner investment and independence • Decreases disruptive behaviors
Hopes and Dreams • Students think of their own ideas for their individual hopes and dreams. • Students select “most important” hope and dream that is realistic, relevant, and respectful of themselves and others. • Students have a way to share with classmates. • Hopes and dreams are posted so they may be referred to throughout the year.
Creating Rules • Teacher collaborates with students to develop classroom rules that support everyone’s learning. • Rules posted on website. • “Take a Break” area

Homework • Goal = reinforce concepts taught, prepare for continuing education, learning to study • Not graded • 40 minutes nightly – all subjects • “Draw = line and sign” = less stress • Fact practice nightly, 5 minutes • Daily agenda book • Incomplete assignments will be completed during free time at school
