Characteristics of Renaissance Art • Perspective ( three dimensions) • Individualism - Human Body, facial expression • Religious subjects (Madonna with child) • Nature • Realism in detail and color

Renaissance Art Realism – images emphasize human characteristics such as facial expressions, body features. Colors – true to life, use of light and dark Perspective – three dimensional, smaller background Individual person/people focus Religious subjects
Michelangelo • Painter/Sculptor • 1512, Michelangelo's frescoes of the Sistine Chapel in Rome were first shown to the public. • It took four years to paint the detailed Biblical scenes. • Most famous sculpture was “David”
Donatello • Sculptor • Best known for bronze and marble figures
Leonardo DaVinci • Painter, Sculptor, Scientist • “Mona Lisa.” Believed to be an image of Lisa Gherardini (1503) Wife of a wealthy businessman from Florence named Francesco del Giocondo. It’s Italian name, “La Gioconda.”
Some people think the Mona Lisa was DaVinci’s self portrait as a woman; this idea, while interesting is considered not likely by experts
