When direct and indirect object pronouns are used together, the indirect object pronoun always precedes the direct object pronoun. El camarero te da el menú. El camarero telo da. • ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ • IO DO IO DO The waiter is giving you the menu. The waiter is giving it to you.
Two pronouns that begin with the letter l cannot be used together. Therefore, le and les become se when they appear with lo, la, los, and las. El cocinero les recomendó la langosta a sus clientes. El cocinero sela recomendó. ↑ ↑ ↑ ↑ IO DO IO DO The chef recommended the lobster to his customers. The chef recommended it to them. Le pido el salmón a mi amigo. Remember that when an infinitive or a present participle is present, you have two options for object pronoun placement. La camarera les va a servir las ensaladas a ellos. The waitress is going to serve the salads to them. La camarera se las va a servir. or La camarera va a servírselas. The waitress is going to serve them to them. Mi padre nos está preparando el pescado. My father is preparing the fish for us. Mi padre nos lo está preparando. or Mi padre está preparándonoslo. My father is preparing it for us.
