Why is assertiveness crucial? • Employees must be prepared to handle conflicts sensibly • Can only benefit interpersonal communication • Can help people control their behavior (less shy, more expressive) • Equalizes balance of power between individuals in a conflict situation
What is the goal of assertiveness? • Enhance one’s self image • Increase his or her effectiveness in social and professional situations

Assertiveness is based on two fundamental rights • Individuals are more likely to obtain what they desire by letting others know what they think, feel and want • Individuals are more likely to establish climates of cooperation rather than confrontation by respecting the rights, needs, and priorities of others
Fundamental to proper assertiveness is a belief in these basic rights • Individuals have the right to be treated with respect • Individuals have the right to promote their dignity and self-respect • Individuals are entitled to defend themselves • Encourage others to express their ideas • Individuals have the right to express their feelings about how other’s behavior effects them
